Landfill Leachate

NAWE has extensive experience in designing simple, low-cost, ecological systems to drive specific treatment reactions for our industrial clients. Our engineered wetland systems, in-situ phyto- and bioremediation systems and engineered soil-matrix biofilters help our customers achieve exceptional business and environmental results. NAWE's industrial clients fall into the following sectors.

Landfill Leachate
Due to the wide variety of contaminants found in landfill leachate, required unit processes for leachate treatment systems varies from site to site. NAWE has designed numerous engineered wetland systems to achieve specific treatment objectives.

Anoka County Landfill (Anoka, Minnesota)
At the Anoka County Landfill, a former Superfund site, NAWE designed a Forced Bed Aeration™ system that has substantially lowered operating cost and consistently met drinking water limits at the wetland discharge for all primary and secondary drinking water limits, ensuring that water retuned to the environment meets regulatory objectives.

Waste Management, Inc. (Chicago, Illinois)
Waste Management, Inc. needed long-term, low-cost solution for leachate treatment at four Illinois landfills. NAWE, in partnership with Weaver Boos, conducted Feasibility Assessments for four of Waste Management's closed landfill sites. The assessments compiled and documented project requirements, evaluated the range of technical options available for treatment, and recommended a treatment and disposal system that would best serve each of the landfills. The assessments also provided budgetary capital, operation, and maintenance costs and addressed the risks and benefits associated with each option.

Jones County Landfill (Anamosa, Iowa)
The Jones County Landfill wetland treatment system was a joint research effort between NAWE, the University of Iowa, and the Iowa Biotechnology and Byproducts Consortium. The wetland system was a pilot-scale, aerated subsurface-flow wetland designed to treat landfill leachate. Research on this treatment system has provided insights into cold-climate treatment performance, energy balances, and hydraulic efficiency of subsurface-flow constructed wetlands. The Jones County wetland system demonstrated that Forced Bed Aeration treatment wetlands are capable of excellent year-round ammonia removal.
